Bilum and Bilas is a story deeply close to our hearts, rooted in the vibrant culture of Papua New Guinea (PNG), where I found inspiration to help women make their own choices and live on their own terms.
In PNG, the art of making Bilums—traditional woven bags made from natural fibers—is passed down through generations. These bags, used for carrying everything from food to babies, are symbols of cultural heritage, reflecting the diverse traditions of PNG’s tribes. Bilas, the traditional dress and adornments worn during ceremonies, represents identity, social status, and personal style.
Yet, the women artisans who create these works of art often face immense hardships. Living in remote areas with limited access to education and economic opportunities, their craftsmanship has long been undervalued and overlooked. Despite their skill, many work in difficult conditions, weaving not just fibers but a hope for a better future.
Bringing these incredible products to a global audience has been transformative. What once was confined to remote villages is now admired worldwide. The women artisans, who once could only dream of their work being recognized beyond their communities, now see their Bilums and Bilas celebrated as art, carrying their stories and heritage.
This journey is about more than just selling products; it’s about empowering these women to continue their craft with dignity and pride. Through global exposure, they are not just surviving—they are thriving, reclaiming their identities and transforming their communities, one woven piece at a time
